What is Mercury's period of revolution around the sun?

The story behind the answer

Mercury’s period of revolution around the Sun is 88 Earth days. This orbital period is also called Mercury’s sidereal year: the time the planet takes to complete one orbit relative to the distant stars.

Mercury travels around the Sun at an average distance of about 58 million kilometers. Because it is the innermost planet, it moves faster than any other major planet, reaching orbital speeds of roughly 47 kilometers per second. Its orbit is also noticeably eccentric, so its distance from the Sun changes during the year.

Mercury’s year is easy to confuse with its day. The planet rotates once on its axis every 58.6 Earth days, but its solar day—from one sunrise to the next—lasts about 176 Earth days. This unusual pattern comes from Mercury’s 3:2 spin-orbit resonance: it rotates three times for every two trips around the Sun. Despite its short year, Mercury experiences extreme surface temperatures.
