Mater is the rusty, blue-gray tow truck who lives in Radiator Springs and becomes Lightning McQueen’s closest friend. His official name is Tow Mater, a pun on “tomato,” and his informal speech and tall tales are central to the series’ humor.

Although Mater is not a racing vehicle, he repeatedly proves resourceful. He helps Lightning understand friendship and the importance of the community, and he becomes unexpectedly involved in international espionage during Cars 2.
