What is Martin Scorsese's middle name?

The story behind the answer

Martin Scorsese’s middle name is Charles, making his full birth name Martin Charles Scorsese.

Scorsese was born on November 17, 1942, in Flushing, Queens, New York City, and grew up in Manhattan’s Little Italy. His parents, Charles and Catherine Scorsese, worked in New York’s Garment District; both also appeared as actors in some of their son’s later films.

His Italian-American family roots strongly influenced his filmmaking. All four of his grandparents were immigrants from Sicily, and his early experiences in Little Italy helped shape films such as “Mean Streets” and “Goodfellas.” Childhood asthma kept him from many physical activities, so frequent trips to the cinema became central to his developing passion for movies.

Scorsese studied at New York University, where he made the short film “The Big Shave” and directed his first feature, “Who’s That Knocking at My Door,” in 1967. He later became one of the central directors of the New Hollywood era.
