What is Hiccup’s full name in Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon books?

Hiccup’s full name in Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon books is Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.

The name identifies Hiccup as the third member of his family to use it. He is the son of Stoick the Vast and is presented as the heir to the Hooligan Tribe, although his personality differs sharply from the traditionally heroic Viking image expected of him.

The book version of Hiccup is distinct from the DreamWorks film character. The novels use a comic, illustrated style and give Hiccup a much longer formal name than the films normally use. The films retain Hiccup and Stoick but alter many characters, relationships, settings, and story events.

Readers sometimes confuse Hiccup’s book name with the shorter film identity. The numeral III is part of the canonical book name, not a reference to a film sequel or to Hiccup’s age.
