What is Ghana’s annual 6 March celebration of independence from Britain officially called?

The story behind the answer

Ghana’s annual 6 March celebration of independence from Britain is officially called Independence Day.

Ghana became independent on 6 March 1957, when the former British Gold Coast became a sovereign state. It was the first sub-Saharan African colony to achieve independence from European colonial rule in the postwar era, making the event internationally significant.

Kwame Nkrumah led the independence movement and became Ghana’s first prime minister. The declaration took place in Accra, where large crowds gathered for the historic ceremony. Ghana’s national celebrations include parades, school performances, speeches, and cultural events.

Ghana’s Republic Day is a different observance. It commemorates the country becoming a republic in 1960 and is held on 1 July. Founders’ Day, observed on 21 September, is also separate from Independence Day.
