What is Gaudí's maternal family name?

Gaudí’s maternal family name was Cornet. His full birth name was Antoni Plàcid Guillem Gaudí i Cornet, following the Catalan naming tradition of combining paternal and maternal surnames.

His mother was Antònia Cornet i Bertran, while his father was Francesc Gaudí i Serra, a coppersmith. That family background mattered to Gaudí’s development: he later said his ability to understand space was connected to watching his father work with metal, boilers, and stills.

Cornet is often confused with Serra because Serra was Gaudí’s paternal family name. The names of his patrons and projects can also cause mix-ups: Güell belonged to his patron Eusebi Güell, and Vicens appears in Casa Vicens, one of Gaudí’s early architectural works. Neither is part of Gaudí’s own family name.
