What is BMW's best-selling model series?

The story behind the answer

BMW’s best-selling model series is the 3 Series.

Introduced in 1975 as the successor to BMW’s 02 Series, the 3 Series established the compact executive-sedan formula that became central to the brand. Its combination of sporty handling, rear-wheel-drive engineering, premium equipment and relatively manageable size helped it attract buyers worldwide.

The name covers several body styles and generations, including sedans, Touring wagons, convertibles and earlier coupés. BMW’s M3 performance models also grew from the 3 Series family, although modern M4 coupés and convertibles use a separate model name. That breadth is one reason “3 Series” is more accurate than naming only the sedan.

A common mix-up is confusing the 3 Series with the 5 Series, BMW’s larger executive car, or the X3, a sport-utility model. The 3 Series remains the historically recognized best-selling BMW model range, even though annual rankings can vary as the company expands its SUV lineup.
