Bilbo Baggins’s home village in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is Hobbiton.
Hobbiton lies in the Shire, a peaceful region inhabited mainly by hobbits. Bilbo’s house, Bag End, is built into a hill overlooking the village. It is the starting point for his unexpected journey with the dwarves and the wizard Gandalf.
Hobbiton is also central to The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo celebrates his eleventy-first birthday there before leaving the Shire, and Frodo later begins his own mission from Bag End. The village therefore connects both major narratives in Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
Hobbiton is often confused with the wider Shire, but the names refer to different places: Hobbiton is a settlement, while the Shire is the larger region. The film adaptations built a Hobbiton set near Matamata in New Zealand, which became a permanent visitor attraction after filming.
