Barney Fife’s occupation in Mayberry is deputy sheriff. Played by Don Knotts, Barney serves under his cousin and friend Andy Taylor, the town’s sheriff, in the fictional North Carolina community of Mayberry.

Barney is a law-enforcement officer, but the show uses his exaggerated confidence and frequent blunders as a major source of comedy.
