What is Assam’s winter harvest festival, also called Bhogali Bihu, called?

The story behind the answer

Assam’s winter harvest festival, also called Bhogali Bihu, is called Magh Bihu.

Magh Bihu is celebrated in Assam in January, when the winter harvest has been gathered. The name comes from the Assamese month of Magh, and “Bhogali” refers to feasting. Families prepare abundant meals from newly harvested rice, vegetables, fish, and other local produce.

A central tradition is the construction of temporary structures called mejis and bhelaghar. People gather around the meji for a ceremonial fire and community observances, while the bhelaghar may be used for overnight festivities and shared meals.

Assam has three major Bihu festivals. Magh Bihu is the harvest and feasting festival; Bohag Bihu marks the Assamese New Year and spring; and Kati Bihu is associated with prayer during the growing season.
