What is Assam’s post-harvest festival, celebrated in January, called?

The story behind the answer

Assam’s post-harvest festival, celebrated in January, is called Magh Bihu.

Magh Bihu is one of Assam’s three major Bihu festivals and is also known as Bhogali Bihu. The word bhogali refers to enjoyment or feasting, matching the festival’s post-harvest setting, when granaries are traditionally full and agricultural work temporarily eases.

Celebrations begin with Uruka, a communal feast on the eve of the main day. People may build temporary structures called meji and bhelaghar, prepare foods from rice and other local ingredients, and gather for games and community activities. Bonfires and ceremonial offerings are characteristic features.

Magh Bihu is often confused with Rongali Bihu, or Bohag Bihu, which occurs in April and marks the Assamese New Year and the agricultural sowing season. Kati Bihu, in October, is associated with a leaner agricultural period. The month and agricultural stage distinguish the three.
