What is Africa’s highest mountain, measured from sea level?

The story behind the answer

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain, rising to 5,895 metres above sea level.

Kilimanjaro is a volcanic massif in Tanzania near the Kenyan border. Its highest point, Uhuru Peak on Kibo’s summit, reaches 5,895 metres. The mountain has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the highest and is dormant rather than completely extinct.

Kilimanjaro is famous for its separate ecological zones, which range from cultivated foothills and rainforest to alpine desert and a cold summit environment. Its remaining glaciers have shrunk substantially over the past century, making the mountain an important example in discussions of climate change and changing mountain environments.

The first recorded ascent to the summit was achieved in 1889 by Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller, and their guide Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo. Kilimanjaro is protected within Kilimanjaro National Park, which was established in 1973 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
