What is a quinceañero in relation to a quinceañera?

The story behind the answer

A quinceañero is a male celebrant of a comparable fifteenth-birthday celebration.

Quinceañera is the familiar feminine term for the young woman honored at the traditional event. Spanish-language usage can use quinceañero for a boy who celebrates his fifteenth birthday in a similar way. The masculine form follows the gendered ending common in Spanish nouns: -a is generally feminine and -o generally masculine.

The celebrations are not required to follow one universal script. A boy’s event may be called a quinceañero, quince años, or another locally preferred name, and its customs depend on the family and community. Some celebrations are elaborate, while others are modest or entirely secular.

The term should not be confused with chambelán, which can refer to a male member of a quinceañera’s court or an escort. A quinceañero identifies the celebrant, not a supporting participant. This distinction helps separate the name of the birthday honoree from the names of people involved in the ceremony.
