A quinceañera’s traditional male escort is commonly called a chambelán.
The Spanish word chambelán refers to a gentleman attendant or escort in the celebration’s court. A chambelán may accompany the honoree during her entrance, formal presentation, and choreographed dances. In some communities, several male attendants serve together as chambelanes.
The word is not identical to padrino. A padrino is a sponsor or godparent-like supporter who may help provide items or expenses, whereas a chambelán is generally part of the court and participates in the event itself.
Usage varies by region and family. Some celebrations use English terms such as escort or escort party, and contemporary quinceañeras may have attendants of any gender. The best-known Spanish feminine counterpart is dama, meaning a female attendant.
