What is a male camel known as?

A male camel is known as a bull.

This naming follows the traditional livestock vocabulary used for several large mammals. A female camel is called a cow, while a young camel is a calf. These terms apply to both major living camel species: the one-humped dromedary and the two-humped Bactrian camel.

The word “bull” is not exclusive to cattle. English also uses it for adult males of animals such as elephants, rhinoceroses, hippos, whales, giraffes, elk, moose, and camels. In camel breeding, a bull is the intact adult male kept for reproduction; a castrated male may instead be described with terms such as gelding, depending on local usage.

A common mix-up is confusing “camel” with “dromedary.” Camel is the broader everyday term, while a dromedary is specifically the one-humped species, Camelus dromedarius. During breeding season, male dromedaries may inflate a soft-palate pouch called a dulla, a striking display used in courtship and dominance behavior.
