What is a group of lions commonly called?

The story behind the answer

A group of lions is commonly called a pride.

A pride is a social unit that may include related adult females, their cubs and one or more adult males. Pride size varies with habitat, prey availability and local conditions. Females often cooperate in hunting and may nurse one another’s cubs.

Lions are unusual among cats because they are strongly social. Many other big cats, including adult tigers and leopards, generally live alone. Within a pride, social bonds are reinforced through grooming, rubbing heads, resting together and coordinated activities.

Pride membership is not fixed forever. Male coalitions may take over a pride, and new males can kill unrelated young cubs after a takeover. Females often remain in their birth pride or in a related social group, while young males typically leave when they mature.
