The Irish fairy queen associated with midsummer and love is Áine.
Áine is an Irish goddess of summer, beauty, fertility, wealth, and sovereignty who is also remembered in County Limerick as Queen of the Fae. Her connection with midsummer is especially strong: Midsummer Night was celebrated in her honor, and Saint John’s Eve rites at Cnoc Áine included flaming bundles carried through fields and among cattle for good luck.
Áine’s stories combine romance, enchantment, and danger. In one Limerick tale, she emerges from a lake at midsummer to comb her golden hair, while a shepherd who steals her comb suffers misfortune. In another, the piper Seán Ó hAodh is taken to a splendid fairy gathering beneath Lough Gur, where Áine gives him a magical purse.
Áine is sometimes confused with Brigid, another major Irish female supernatural figure, or with Danu because of name similarities. She is also linked with Grian, a possible sister or alternate manifestation representing the summer sun. Her name evokes brightness, radiance, joy, and glory.
