What instrument did Leonardo da Vinci design to combine a keyboard with a continuous bowed sound?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed the viola organista to combine a keyboard with a continuous bowed sound.

The viola organista is one of Leonardo’s most distinctive musical inventions. In his drawings, keys control which strings are sounded, while rotating wheels provide the friction normally supplied by a bow. This arrangement could let one performer play several notes with a sustained, string-like tone.

The idea drew on two different instrument families. Its keyboard operation resembles an organ or harpsichord, but its tone-producing mechanism resembles bowed instruments such as violins and violas. It was therefore not simply a keyboard version of a viola and not an ordinary pipe organ.

Leonardo produced several related sketches rather than a single finished commercial instrument. Modern reconstructions have shown that the concept can work, although their mechanisms vary. The viola organista illustrates Leonardo’s habit of combining existing technologies into new systems instead of inventing every component from nothing.
