What image combines with the Liberty Bell on the reverse of the 1976 Bicentennial dollar?

The story behind the answer

The Moon combines with the Liberty Bell on the reverse of the 1976 Bicentennial dollar.

The design shows the Liberty Bell superimposed against the Moon, creating one of the most distinctive images in United States coinage. The bell represents American independence, while the lunar background reflects the country’s space-age identity during the period.

Dennis R. Williams designed the dollar reverse after entering the national competition. He was only 21 years old when his design was selected, making him the youngest person to design a United States coin at that time. Frank Gasparro later made minor changes for production.

The coin was an Eisenhower dollar and carried the dual date 1776–1976. The Liberty Bell should not be confused with the Independence Hall image on the half dollar, even though both designs reference Philadelphia and the Revolution.
