A colonial drummer appeared on the reverse of the U.S. quarter issued for the 1976 Bicentennial.
The commemorative quarter used a special reverse design by Jack L. Ahr. It showed a colonial drummer beside a torch encircled by 13 stars, representing the original colonies. The dual date “1776–1976” appeared on the coin.
The quarter was part of a broader Bicentennial coin program that also included special half-dollar and dollar designs. These coins circulated widely and became familiar reminders of the 200th anniversary.
The drummer design is sometimes mistaken for the reverse of the Bicentennial half dollar, which depicted Independence Hall. America250’s 2026 coin program is a separate anniversary issue, created 50 years after the Bicentennial coinage.
