What humanoid machine did Leonardo da Vinci design around 1495 as an early robot?
Answer
Mechanical knight
Answer
Mechanical knight
Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight around 1495 as an early humanoid automaton.
The machine was intended for a pageant at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Its internal system of gears and cables could reproduce several human-like actions, including sitting, standing, moving its arms, and moving its head and jaw. The armor concealed the mechanisms from spectators.
Leonardo’s original machine has not survived, and for centuries the design was known mainly from his drawings. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a full-scale model based on Leonardo’s notes and sketches. The mechanical knight is often called a robot, although that modern term did not exist in Renaissance Italy and the device was a clockwork automaton rather than an autonomous electronic machine.
