What human-sized mechanical figure did Leonardo da Vinci design for a Milanese court entertainment?
Answer
Mechanical knight
Answer
Mechanical knight
Leonardo da Vinci designed a human-sized mechanical knight for a Milanese court entertainment.
The machine is associated with sketches made around 1495 while Leonardo worked for Ludovico Sforza. Its internal system of cables, pulleys, and gears was intended to let an armored figure perform movements such as sitting, standing, and moving its arms. The design is often called Leonardo’s robot, although “robot” is a modern term that did not exist in the Renaissance.
No complete original machine has survived, so historians reconstruct its capabilities from Leonardo’s drawings and related notes. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a model based on the design. The knight is best understood as an automaton for spectacle, not an autonomous artificial intelligence system or a battlefield robot.
