What human-sized machine did Leonardo da Vinci design with a programmable mechanical interior?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a human-sized machine known as a mechanical knight.

Leonardo created the design in Milan around 1495, probably for a festival or court spectacle sponsored by Ludovico Sforza. The machine was built inside an armored suit and used a system of pulleys, cables, gears, and a control mechanism. Reconstructions indicate that it could sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw.

The figure is often called Leonardo’s robot, although that modern label can be misleading. It was an automaton powered by mechanical linkages, not a programmable electronic robot. Leonardo’s surviving notes do not include a complete construction plan, so modern versions rely on evidence from multiple drawings.

The design shows how Renaissance engineers used theatrical automata to demonstrate motion. It also reveals Leonardo’s interest in the human body as a machine whose movements could be reproduced through coordinated mechanical parts.
