What human-shaped machine did Leonardo da Vinci design with mechanical armor and limbs?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a robotic knight, a human-shaped mechanical automaton covered in armor.

Leonardo’s notes from around 1495 show a system of gears, cables, and pulleys inside an armored figure. The mechanism was intended to move the knight’s arms and other parts of the body. The machine may have been created for a court entertainment in Milan, although surviving records do not prove that a complete original was publicly demonstrated.

The design reflects Leonardo’s detailed studies of human anatomy and mechanical motion. By placing linkages inside armor, he treated the body as a coordinated system of joints and levers. This is why the invention is often discussed as an early robot, even though the word “robot” was not coined until the twentieth century.

In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working model based on Leonardo’s drawings. The reconstruction could perform several simple movements. It does not prove every detail of the original, but it shows that the surviving mechanism contains a coherent design rather than merely a fanciful costume.
