What human-shaped machine did Leonardo da Vinci design in the form of an armored knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci's human-shaped machine in the form of an armored knight is known as Leonardo's robot.

Leonardo designed the mechanical knight around 1495, probably for a spectacle connected with the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The machine was built inside a suit of armor and used a system of pulleys, cables, gears, and levers. According to reconstructions based on his drawings, it could sit, stand, move its arms, and operate its jaw.

The surviving evidence is a set of design notes rather than a complete original robot. In the twentieth century, researchers studied Leonardo's sketches and built working reconstructions, including one displayed in Milan in 2002. Those reconstructions demonstrated that the mechanism could perform several of the movements suggested by the drawings.

It was an automaton, not a modern programmable robot. It had no electronic control, artificial intelligence, or independent decision-making. The word robot is a modern label applied to a mechanically controlled Renaissance machine.
