What human-shaped machine did Leonardo da Vinci design for a 1495 Milan pageant?
Answer
Mechanical knight
Answer
Mechanical knight
Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight, an armored humanoid automaton, for a Milanese pageant around 1495.
The machine was probably intended for a celebration organized under the patronage of Ludovico Sforza. Leonardo’s drawings show an armored figure with a system of pulleys, cables, and gears. The mechanism could reportedly sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head and jaw.
No original robot survives, and the exact performance of the historical machine remains uncertain. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working model based on Leonardo’s surviving notes and sketches. The reconstruction helped demonstrate that the design was mechanically plausible.
The machine is often called Leonardo’s robot, but it was not an electronic robot in the modern sense. It was a Renaissance automaton powered by mechanical linkages.
