What human-shaped machine did Leonardo da Vinci design as a self-moving armored figure?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight, a human-shaped machine intended to move through internal mechanisms.

The design dates to around 1495 and was probably connected with entertainment at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Leonardo’s drawings show an armored figure with a system of pulleys, cables, gears, and other mechanical parts. The mechanism could plausibly produce movements such as sitting, standing, and moving its arms, although the exact capabilities remain debated.

The original machine has not survived, and no complete contemporary description proves precisely how it operated. In 2002, engineer Mark Rosheim built a working model based on Leonardo’s sketches. The mechanical knight is often called a robot, but that modern label can be misleading: it was a clockwork-style automaton without electronic control or artificial intelligence. Its importance lies in the early study of coordinated human-like mechanical movement.
