What human-shaped machine did Leonardo da Vinci design and build for a Milan court entertainment?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a mechanical knight for a Milan court entertainment.

The machine was created around 1495 for festivities organized under the patronage of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. Leonardo’s drawings show a humanlike armored figure operated by cables, pulleys, and a system of gears. The mechanism could reportedly sit, stand, raise its visor, and move its arms.

The original machine has not survived, so its exact capabilities remain uncertain. Researchers reconstructed it from Leonardo’s notebooks, especially the Codex Madrid and related mechanical studies. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working interpretation that demonstrated how the documented mechanisms could produce humanlike movements.

The mechanical knight is sometimes called Leonardo’s robot, but “robot” is a later term. The word robot was introduced by Czech writer Karel Čapek in his 1920 play R.U.R. Leonardo’s device was a Renaissance automaton: a programmed mechanical figure made for spectacle rather than an intelligent machine.
