What human-shaped automaton did Leonardo da Vinci design for a Milanese court pageant?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a human-shaped automaton known as the robot knight for a Milanese court pageant.

The machine was created around 1495 for celebrations connected with Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Leonardo’s drawings show an armored figure whose internal system of gears, cables, and pulleys could support movements such as sitting, standing, and moving its arms.

Unlike a modern robot, the device had no electronics or programmable computer. It was a mechanical automaton powered by carefully arranged physical components. The surviving sketches were rediscovered in the 20th century, and researchers used them to build reconstructions.

The reconstructed robot demonstrated that Leonardo’s anatomical studies and engineering work could be combined in a theatrical machine. It is distinct from the mechanical lion, which was an animal-shaped ceremonial automaton associated with a later French event.
