What human-shaped automaton did Leonardo da Vinci design for a Milan court celebration?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a human-shaped automaton known as the robotic knight for a Milan court celebration.

The design was prepared around 1495 for a pageant organized by Ludovico Sforza, Leonardo’s patron in Milan. The knight wore armor and was intended to perform human-like actions, including sitting, standing, moving its arms, and moving its jaw. Cables and pulleys connected the movements to a system of cams inside the torso.

The machine was probably a theatrical automaton rather than an autonomous robot in the modern sense. It would have followed mechanical sequences set by the arrangement of its internal parts. Leonardo’s original physical model was not known to survive, but drawings discovered in the Codex Madrid I helped researchers reconstruct the mechanism.

In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo’s drawings. The design is often called Leonardo’s robot, but its purpose was entertainment and spectacle, not industrial labor or artificial intelligence.
