What human-powered flying machine did Leonardo da Vinci base on the wing structure of birds?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed an ornithopter, a human-powered flying machine based on the wing structure of birds.

The word ornithopter means a machine that flies by flapping wings. Leonardo studied birds, bats, and the mechanics of flight in notebooks dating mainly from the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. His sketches show wings, frames, joints, and systems intended to transmit movement from a pilot’s body to the wings.

Leonardo correctly recognized that flight required careful control of lift, balance, and air movement. However, human muscles could not provide enough power to lift the proposed machine and pilot. The designs therefore remained theoretical rather than becoming successful aircraft.

An ornithopter differs from a glider, which depends on fixed wings, and from a helicopter, which uses rotating blades. Leonardo’s work was still important because it treated flight as an engineering problem supported by observation and mechanical analysis.
