Gary Kubiak was the Houston Texans coach who said he wished he had “52 Kevin Walters” on his team. The remark praised wide receiver Kevin Walter’s dependability, toughness, and willingness to contribute beyond catching passes.
Kubiak became the Texans’ head coach in 2006, making him the franchise’s second head coach after Dom Capers. He coached Houston through the 2013 season and helped establish the team’s early identity around players such as quarterback Matt Schaub, receiver Andre Johnson, and Walter.
Walter played for the Texans from 2006 through 2010. Although he was not usually treated as a star receiver, he was valued as a physical blocker and a reliable complementary target. The phrase “52 Kevin Walters” therefore meant that Kubiak wanted an entire roster filled with players who brought the same effort and team-first attitude.
Kubiak later became head coach of the Denver Broncos, where he won Super Bowl 50 after the 2015 season. Kevin Walter, meanwhile, finished his NFL career with the Texans and remains associated with the formative years of the franchise.
