What historic first occurred when Emperor Hirohito’s surrender broadcast aired in Japan in 1945?

The story behind the answer

When Emperor Hirohito’s surrender broadcast aired in Japan in 1945, the public heard his voice for the first known time.

Japanese emperors had traditionally remained distant from ordinary subjects, and Hirohito had never previously addressed the population by radio. Millions of people therefore gathered around radio sets at noon on 15 August to hear the recorded Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War.

The event was not a live speech. Hirohito recorded the address at the Imperial Palace on 14 August, and technicians later transmitted the recording through NHK. Its formal language and weak sound quality made it difficult for many listeners to understand.

The speech marked a major change in the relationship between the emperor and the public. It also became a defining moment in Japan’s transition from wartime mobilization to defeat, occupation, demobilization, and postwar reconstruction.
