What group traditionally accompanies a quinceañera as her formal court?

The story behind the answer

A quinceañera’s formal accompanying group is traditionally called her court of honor.

The court commonly includes young women known as damas and young men known as chambelanes. Members may participate in a choreographed entrance or dance, stand with the celebrant for photographs, and accompany her during formal parts of the celebration.

The court reflects the event’s ceremonial character, but its size and composition vary greatly. Some celebrations include a large group, while others have only a few attendants or none at all. Modern families may also choose a mixed-gender or otherwise personalized court.

A court of honor is not the same thing as a wedding party, even though the roles can look similar. Its purpose is to support the quinceañera during a birthday and coming-of-age celebration.
