What group of writers and scholars did C.S. Lewis join at Oxford?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis joined The Inklings, an informal Oxford literary discussion group.

The group met mainly in Oxford during the 1930s and 1940s. Members and regular participants read aloud from works in progress, discussed literature, and debated ideas. The meetings were associated especially with The Eagle and Child pub, known to members as the Bird and Baby, and with rooms at Oxford colleges.

J.R.R. Tolkien was one of Lewis’s closest Inklings colleagues. Charles Williams and Owen Barfield were also important members or participants. The group was not a formal society with a fixed membership list, constitution, or publication program.

The Inklings are sometimes mistaken for Bloomsbury, a London-centered modernist circle with very different membership and habits. Lewis’s association with the Inklings connected him to a particularly influential network of fantasy writers and Christian intellectuals.
