Chlorophyll absorbs light energy and helps convert it into chemical energy during photosynthesis. In plants and algae, it is located mainly in chloroplasts, specifically in the thylakoid membranes where photosynthetic reaction centers are organized. Cyanobacteria also contain chlorophyll and perform oxygen-producing photosynthesis.
Chlorophyll absorbs light most strongly in blue and red portions of the visible spectrum, while reflecting or transmitting more green light. That selective absorption is why leaves and many algae appear green. The pigment is not a single molecule: green plants use chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, which absorb slightly different ranges of light and work together with other pigments.
Carotene and xanthophyll are accessory pigments rather than the main green pigment. They broaden the range of light a plant can capture and help protect photosynthetic machinery. Anthocyanins produce red, purple, and blue colors in many plant tissues, but they are not the primary pigment driving ordinary oxygenic photosynthesis.
During photosynthesis, chlorophyll helps power the reactions that use light, water, and carbon dioxide to produce sugars and release oxygen.
