What Greek wine is flavored with pine resin?
Answer
Retsina
Answer
Retsina
Retsina is the Greek wine flavored with pine resin.
The tradition dates back at least 2,000 years. Ancient wine vessels, especially amphorae, were sometimes sealed with Aleppo pine resin to limit contact with air and help prevent spoilage. The resin gradually infused the wine with its distinctive aroma and flavor.
Modern retsina is usually made like a white or rosé wine, with small pieces of pine resin added during fermentation. The resin is removed before bottling, so the finished drink is clear rather than visibly resinous. Savatiano is the traditional grape, although Assyrtiko and Roditis may also be used.
A common mix-up is assuming retsina is always a heavily flavored red wine. It is most often white, sometimes rosé, and only very rarely red. Production is especially associated with Attica, Boeotia, and Euboea, and it is often served with strongly seasoned Greek foods.
