What Greek liqueur is flavored with mastic resin from Chios?

The story behind the answer

The Greek liqueur flavored with mastic resin from Chios is mastika.

Mastika, also called mastiha or mastichato in Greece, is a sweet liqueur flavored with mastic from the island of Chios. Producers use mastic distillate or mastic oil, then dilute and sweeten the spirit. It is commonly served chilled, often as an after-dinner drink, and has a distinctive piney, herbal, resinous aroma.

The flavoring comes from the hardened sap of Pistacia lentiscus var. chia, a mastic tree cultivated especially in southern Chios. Growers collect the resin after making small cuts in the bark; the droplets harden into the famous “tears” of Chios. The island’s production is organized around the Mastichochoria, or “mastic villages.”

Mastika is not ouzo, which is an anise-flavored spirit, nor Metaxa, a Greek spirit made from brandy and botanicals. Chios Mastiha liqueur has protected designation of origin status in the European Union, linking the recognized product to its island source.
