What Greek city hosted the 2004 Olympic Games?
Answer
Athens
Answer
Athens
Athens was the Greek city that hosted the 2004 Olympic Games.
Officially called the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad, the 2004 Summer Olympics took place in Athens from August 13 through August 29. The Greek capital had previously hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, so the 2004 event represented the Olympics' return to their birthplace and Athens' second modern Summer Games.
Athens was selected as host city at the International Olympic Committee's 106th Session in Lausanne on September 5, 1997. The competition included 301 events across 28 sports, with athletes representing 201 national Olympic committees. The Olympic Stadium in Marousi hosted the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics events.
The 2004 Games also introduced women's wrestling and women's sabre to the Olympic program. Athens is sometimes confused with Ancient Olympia, where the Olympic flame-lighting ceremony took place; Olympia is the historic sanctuary, while Athens was the host city for the modern Games.
