The game engine that powers Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds is the Genie Engine, commonly shortened to Genie.
Ensemble Studios developed the engine for its real-time strategy games, and LucasArts licensed it for Galactic Battlegrounds. The Star Wars game adapts the engine’s isometric, resource-gathering strategy structure to factions from the Star Wars universe, including the Galactic Empire, Rebel Alliance, Wookiees, Trade Federation, Gungans, and Naboo.
Genie was best known for powering Age of Empires and Age of Empires II, which explains the close resemblance between Galactic Battlegrounds and those historical strategy games. It supports features such as campaigns, scenario editing, LAN play, and other multiplayer modes.
A common mix-up is choosing Zero, because Zero is the engine used by some later LucasArts titles, including Star Wars: Force Commander. Unreal Engine and id Tech 3 are associated with other genres and games; id Tech 3, for example, powers Jedi Academy. Galactic Battlegrounds debuted in 2001, with the Clone Campaigns expansion following in 2002.
