A pineapple sits on top of the Wimbledon gentlemen’s singles trophy.

The small golden pineapple is part of the ornate design of the silver-gilt cup awarded to the gentlemen’s singles champion. The trophy is about 18.5 inches (47 centimetres) tall and 7.5 inches (19 centimetres) in diameter, and its decoration includes several symbolic figures and motifs. The pineapple is therefore a real feature of the trophy, not a piece of fruit placed on it for presentation.

The cup itself has been awarded since 1887 and carries the inscription “All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World.” Because the original trophy remains with the All England Club, champions receive a three-quarter-size replica engraved with the names of past winners.

The pineapple is sometimes confused with a pomegranate because both fruits appear in historical art and decorative symbolism. Wimbledon’s ladies’ singles champion receives a different trophy: the sterling-silver Venus Rosewater Dish, a large salver decorated with mythological figures. The gentlemen’s trophy is commonly called the Gentlemen’s Singles Trophy or the Challenge Cup.
