What fruit does Digory Kirke bring from the garden to heal his mother?

The story behind the answer

Digory Kirke brings a silver apple from a walled garden to heal his mother in The Magician’s Nephew. The enchanted fruit becomes central to both Digory’s personal story and Narnia’s origin.

After Digory and Polly accidentally bring Jadis from the dying world of Charn into newly created Narnia, Aslan sends Digory to a distant garden. He must take an apple from its tree and bring it back so that it can be planted in Narnia. The resulting tree becomes the Tree of Protection, keeping Jadis away from the land for centuries.

Jadis has already eaten one of the silver apples and uses her new immortality to tempt Digory. She urges him to take an apple for himself or steal one for his mother, who is seriously ill. Digory refuses to disobey Aslan and returns with the fruit. With Aslan’s permission, he later receives another apple to take home, and his mother recovers.

The apple also links the novel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Digory plants its core in England; when the tree later falls, its wood is used to make the wardrobe that opens into Narnia. The fruit is silver, not golden or an ordinary peach.
