A quinceañera traditionally receives or changes into high heels during the celebration.
The shoe change is a symbolic custom in which the honoree begins in flat shoes and then puts on high-heeled shoes. The change represents a transition from childhood toward young womanhood and is often performed by her father or another important family member.
The custom is sometimes called the changing of the shoes. It is separate from the quinceañera’s court dances and may take place during the reception, depending on the family’s planned order of events.
Not every celebration includes this ritual, and modern families may choose different footwear or adapt the symbolism. High heels are therefore the traditional answer, but they are not a universal requirement. The custom also does not mean that the honoree must wear heels for the entire event.
