The multicolored text in classic Doge memes is famously set in Comic Sans.
Doge memes typically feature a Shiba Inu—most famously Kabosu—surrounded by short fragments of deliberately broken English. The captions are usually multicolored and arranged around the dog’s face, presenting an imagined internal monologue with phrases such as “very wow,” “such excite,” or “much amaze.” Comic Sans became part of the meme’s recognizable visual identity.
The image behind the best-known Doge meme was a 2010 photograph of Kabosu, posted by her owner, Atsuko Sato. The meme spread widely in 2013, when its caption style and unusual grammar became highly recognizable across social media. That same year also saw the launch of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency inspired by the meme.
Comic Sans is sometimes confused with the heavy sans-serif fonts used in older lolcat image macros, where Impact and Arial Black were common. Doge’s signature look is different: the font is Comic Sans, the text is colorful, and the phrases are intentionally ungrammatical. “Doge” itself is a misspelling of “dog” that predates the meme’s largest wave of popularity.
