In 2022, WhatsApp increased its maximum file size limit to 2 GB. The change made it much easier to share large videos, presentations, documents, and other files directly inside chats.
Before the increase, WhatsApp’s general file-sharing limit was 100 MB, a restriction that often forced users to compress files or rely on separate cloud-storage services. WhatsApp announced the 2-GB limit as part of broader improvements aimed at helping people collaborate in groups and Communities.
The limit applies to supported file attachments, but it does not mean every type of WhatsApp media is unlimited. Upload speed, available storage, operating-system restrictions, and the recipient’s connection can still affect the experience. The 2-GB figure is also different from WhatsApp’s older limits for particular photo and video-sharing workflows, which have changed independently over time.
