What fictional continent contains Mordor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth?

The story behind the answer

Mordor is located in Middle-earth in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional world.

Middle-earth is the main setting for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It is a large region of Arda, Tolkien’s broader created world, and contains places such as the Shire, Gondor, Rohan, Mirkwood, and Mordor.

Mordor is the dark land where Sauron establishes his stronghold and where the One Ring must ultimately be destroyed. Mount Doom, the volcanic site of the Ring’s forging, lies within Mordor’s borders.

A frequent terminology mix-up is calling Middle-earth a planet or a separate universe. In Tolkien’s mythology, Arda is the world, while Middle-earth is a major continent or region within it. Aman, Beleriand, and Númenor are other important lands in different periods of Tolkien’s history, but they are not the name of the setting containing Mordor.
