After Cristiano Ronaldo’s three-day trial at age 12, Sporting CP signed him for a fee of £1,500.
The trial took place in 1997, after Ronaldo had played youth football for Andorinha and Nacional on Madeira. Sporting’s decision changed the direction of his life: he moved from the island to Lisbon to enter the club’s youth system, leaving behind his family and familiar surroundings while still a child.
The amount is striking because it was a modest youth-development fee compared with the enormous transfers associated with Ronaldo later in his career. Sporting’s investment gave him access to elite coaching and a pathway through the club’s age-group teams. He became known for his technical ability and athletic potential before reaching the senior side.
The £1,500 fee should not be confused with the much larger £12 million-plus transfer Sporting received from Manchester United in 2003. That later deal followed Ronaldo’s first-team breakthrough and his memorable performance against United in a friendly at Lisbon’s José Alvalade Stadium.
