What family contains the medically important recluse spiders?

The story behind the answer

The family containing the medically important recluse spiders is Sicariidae.

Sicariidae is a family of six-eyed venomous spiders that includes the recluse-spider genus Loxosceles. Its members are known for venom that can sometimes cause loxoscelism, including necrotic skin damage, although many suspected bites are mild or unrelated to recluse spiders.

The family name is broader than “recluse spiders.” It also includes Sicarius, the assassin or sand spiders, and Hexophthalma, African sand spiders formerly included in Sicarius. A common mix-up is Loxoscelidae: recluse spiders were once placed in that separate family, but modern classification places them in Sicariidae. The brown recluse, Mediterranean recluse, and Chilean recluse are all Loxosceles species within this family.
