What expedition explored the Louisiana Purchase for the United States from 1804 to 1806, a story linked to America250?

The story behind the answer

The Lewis and Clark Expedition explored the Louisiana Purchase for the United States from 1804 to 1806, a story linked to America250.

President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the expedition after the United States acquired the Louisiana Territory in 1803. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the Corps of Discovery westward from the Mississippi River, seeking information about geography, natural resources, Native nations, and possible water routes to the Pacific Ocean.

The expedition departed in May 1804 and reached the Pacific in November 1805. It returned to the United States in September 1806 after traveling thousands of miles. Sacagawea, a Lemhi Shoshone woman, accompanied the party with her infant son and helped communicate with some Native communities. York, an enslaved man owned by Clark, also traveled with the corps.

The journey did not pass through an empty wilderness. The expedition entered lands inhabited by numerous Indigenous nations and relied on diplomacy, trade, guides, and interpreters. Its maps and reports expanded U.S. knowledge, while later American expansion brought major disruption and dispossession to Native peoples.
