Charles Darwin developed sexual selection to explain traits that seemed harmful to survival but beneficial for reproduction. In peafowl, female choice is a form of intersexual selection: peahens may prefer males displaying impressive trains and eyespots. Males do not provide parental care, so their reproductive success depends heavily on mating opportunities.

The tail is not simply proof that a male is universally healthier, and scientists still debate exactly which features peahens prefer. Experiments removing eyespots have produced evidence of reduced mating success, while other studies have found little or no preference for more elaborate trains. Natural selection still matters because survival costs limit how extreme the ornament can become.
